Chutney Recipes | 9 Easy Indian Chutneys

Chutney Recipes – Chutney is a spicy and relishing condiment in Indian cuisine made from a mixture of spices, vegetables and fruits. They can be paired with almost all meals and snacks in the Indian subcontinent.

Chutneys can be tart, sweet, spicy or quite hot in flavor. There is a wide spectrum of different chutney recipes & preparations all over the country, with distinctive regional and cultural preferences.

There are a variety of wet chutneys like coconut chutney, coriander chutney, mint chutney, curry leaves chutney, tomato chutney, kairi ki chutney (raw mango chutney) etc.

There are also dry chutneys, which are mostly in forms of powders and are based on pulses and oil seeds. These include the likes of groundnut, coconut, sesame seed chutney etc. Further chutneys many times contain a mix of two or more ingredients.

Main uses of chutney

Chutneys form an integral part of breakfast items in the South Indian cuisine. They are also used as sandwich spreads, mixed in various Indian chaats, used as topping on many snacks and paired with Indian breads, rice etc.

Many Indian street foods like Vada PavBhel Puri, Raj Kachori, Aloo Tikki etc. owe their distinct tangy taste to liberal use of freshly prepared lip smacking chutneys.

Long shelf life

Chutneys not only bring freshness and tanginess to the food, but they also facilitate easy digestion of accompanying snacks or meals. Although wet chutneys do not have as long a shelf life as Pickles, they can generally last from a week upto a month.

Dry chutneys can be used for even longer periods if stored properly. Apart from its taste and other virtues, chutney is also a good way to preserve fruits or vegetables in their season when they are fresh and available in plenty.
