Fruit Chaat Recipe | Sweet & Spicy Fruit Salad

Fruit Chaat is a delicious, sweet & tangy Indian chaat made with chilled juicy fruits flavored with chaat masala and other spices.

Fruit chaat is loved by kids and adults alike and is a fun way to include some fruits into your diet. This healthy chaat takes just minutes to make and is a great way to satisfy your food cravings.

This refreshing chaat can be enjoyed as a dessert, an evening snack or to fill in the gap between meals and is the perfect summertime recipe.

What is Chaat?

Chaat comes from the Hindi word chaanta (चाटना), which means to lick. Chaats are generally snacks bursting with tongue tickling sweet, spicy and tangy flavors.

Most of the popular chaats dishes are normally fried and savory snacks like samosas chaat, papri chaat, aloo chaat etc topped with sweet & spicy chutneys. However, fruit chaat is a unique chaat made from a sweet fruit base and topped with savory & tangy spices, most importantly chaat masala.

What is Chaat Masala?

Chaat Masala is a commonly used blend of spices, mainly comprising of dry mango powder (amchur), roasted cumin powder (jeera), black salt (kala namak), pomegranate seed powder (anardana) and dry ginger powder (saunth). Apart from these main spices, other spices may vary across preparations.

It has a very distinctive taste and is generally added as a topping on snacks for a spicy & tangy flavor. Addition of chaat masala to fruits imparts a unique earthy flavor and enhances the sweetness of the fruits.

What Fruits to use in Fruit Chaat?

You can use almost any fruit that is available to you for this recipe. It’s nice to use a mix of sweet & tangy fruits to balance out the flavors. Combining hard fruits (like apple, pears) with soft fruits (like grapes, oranges etc.) also enhances the texture of the dish. You can also try to mix fruits of different colors for a prettier dish.

My favorite basic combination of fruits for this chaat is bananas, apple & grapes. Other than that, many fruits like pears, oranges, cherries, peaches, apricots, watermelon, strawberries, pomegranate seeds (anar dana), pineapple etc. go well with it.

Variations of Fruit Chaat

The basic recipe of fruit chaat mixed fresh fruits with lemon juice, chaat masala, black salt & black pepper. However, there are many variations that you can do in this recipe :

  • Like any other true Indian chaat, add tamarind & coriander chutney for a distinctive sweet & spicy flavor.
  • Many people like to add some sort of fresh fruit dressing like orange, pineapple, mango juice to the fruit chaat.
  • Add some boiled & seasoned chickpeas. They give a nice contrast to the sweet fruits and also add some protein to the dish.
  • Sprinkle some cinnamon powder on the chaat for a unique flavor.

Serving & Storage

This chaat is best served chilled. I like to use chilled fruits when preparing the chaat and then leaving it in the refrigerator for 10 mins or till it’s time to serve.

Fruit chaat is best enjoyed when it’s fresh. You can store it in the refrigerator for upto a day. However the fruits start to turn brown & mushy if left after cutting for too long and also start leaving water after adding spices so I prefer making it just before eating.
