Jeera Rice or Cumin Rice is a simple Indian rice dish flavored with cumin seeds. Cumin seeds and select Indian spices sautéed in ghee add a unique flavor to plain rice when cooked together. This rice dish is quite common in North India.

Jeera Rice makes a delicious and aromatic side dish which can be served with any meal to make it more interesting. It is comfort food that gives you a feeling of fullness after a meal.

  • 2 Teaspoons Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 1 Bay Leaf (Tej Patta)
  • 3 Cloves Laung (Cloves)
  • 2 Green Cardamom (Hari Elaichi)
  • 1 Javitri (Mace Strand)
  • 1 Inch Dalchini (Cinnamon Stick)
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 4 Cups Water
  • 2 Teaspoons Cooking Oil
  • 1/2 Cup Coriander Leaves (Cilantro or Dhaniya)

  • Heat some oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and fry them for a few seconds till they start to splutter.

  • Add bay leaf (tej patta), green cardamom (choti elaichi), mace strand (javitri), cloves (laung) and a small stick of cinnamon (dalchini).

  • Wash rice thoroughly and add them to the pan.
